Shows based on the life of a composer, are not always the best choice for an amateur society to produce, as inevitably one person holds the stage for most of the time, whilst the chorus have only spasmodic appearances. But George M! under the excellent direction of producer Kirsty Smith, gave everyone a chance to 'see, and be seen'.

Despite the initial difficulty with the sound, once 'on the road', the show progressed smoothly from one scene to another, providing the audience with a colourful, fast moving, song packed entertainment.

The large cast was of course dominated by the presence of George M, played by Martin Elliff, who portrayed the character of the composer with great sensitivity and depth of feeling. His determination to do things 'his way', coming across well. Congratulations!

Jerry and Nellie Cohan were well cast in Rob Seymour and Jan Marchant, who portrayed these characters again with a great deal of understanding and sensitivity. Good stage movement and nice clear diction, together with good singing voices, made these two very good performances. (Nice to see Rob with a part he could 'get his teeth into'!)

Support from the whole cast was excellent and I particularly enjoyed the performance of Ethel Levy by Linda Kinghorn as George's long suffering 'love interest', Linda always has the ability to bring a vibrance into any character that she portrays, and this was no exception, singing with great feeling, her numbers always enjoyable. I just wish that there had been more of her!

Karen Wray as Josie Cohan also deserved a special mention, Very well portrayed, with good diction, good easy movement, and a very nice singing voice, I enjoyed her numbers enormously.

Everyone in the audience loved the ventriloquist's dummy, or should I say, everyone loved Maureen Lippiatt. This lady is so enjoyable, no matter how small a part she has. What a character! Looking forward to seeing her again,

Choreography was original and colourful, and well executed with precision and enthusiasm by the company.

Costumes were good and in period, with the chorus giving the colour and contrast which was needed, Well done Wardrobe Ladies!

Makeup was unobtrusive and the 'growing older', was done gracefully and well.

All in all, an excellent production which I thoroughly enjoyed. I do hope that it was the financial success that it deserved to be, despite the fact that it might not have been an initial box office attraction.

You all work well as a company, and you obviously rehearse very hard. You also look as if you believe in what you are doing, and you enjoy it. This comes over to the audience, and so they enjoy it also.

Congratulations!
