This was an energetic, well presented show with plenty of pace. The musical content of the show was incredibly demanding, with at least 18 musical numbers per 'Act'. Thanks for dealing with these so professionally. The range of songs was extremely competently delivered by all involved and the style of narration well done.
The two main principals, Irving Berlin and Ellen Mackay, were excellently portrayed with plenty of light and shade. They held the show together well and maintained a good pace. The minor principals - too many to list individually - were very versatile and deserve specific mention for the quality of their input. This was particularly illustrated in numbers such as Snooky Ookums where the comedy element was excellently used. The chorus numbers were the strongest I have seen this group do to date. This was specifically demonstrated in How Deep Is The Ocean, Say It Isn't So and especially with Steppin' Out With My Baby. The management of the chorus and competency of the choreography was particularly strong - great to see it and keep this up with Copacabana. The combination of the roles of the Director and the Musical Director worked particularly well in this production - as the music controls and narrates the action in the show. Well done on keeping both elements balanced. The acknowledgement in the programme to the pianist is much appreciated, they are very important people! The simplicity with variety of the costumes was particularly well done - it added to the overall professionalism of the show. The 'Technical Support' team were also excellent - as would be expected of such a good group. However, be careful with management of microphones - I know this was the first night but some sounds did escape that should not have been heard. Otherwise the sound balance was excellent. The other slightly annoying sound was the drumming of feet on the stage. I realise that this may not be solvable but be aware of the impact this can have on the performance. The layout of the stage was very effective, especially the stage extensions. This contributed to the maintenance of pace throughout the show. One or two lighting cues to the edges of the stage were a bit slow again - probably first night nerves. Overall this was another excellent and very professional performance with lots of variety and pace for all performers. I very much look forward to seeing the next one with all its new challenges.
